This includes faster target acquisition, drawing from concealed carry, shooting from different positions, and understanding situational awareness. Intermediate shooters should maintain a consistent training schedule, gradually introducing more complex scenarios into their routines. Again we recommend weekly training with an instructor, along with a regimen of dry fire training at home.

Competent Shooters – Maintaining and Enhancing Proficiency: For those who have achieved a level of proficiency, the key is to keep challenging oneself. This can involve advanced drills, simulated stress scenarios, and decision-making exercises. Regular practice remains essential to maintain skill levels and reaction times. Training regularity can change now that you are at this level, twice a month is a good compromise if weekly is not an option.

Special Focus – Training for Everyday Carry and Self-Defense

Even more importantly, safety and responsible handling should always be the top priority, as shooting competitions have other competitors and spectators in your vicinity. Before you do a single competition your firearm handling and safety has to be vetted by your club. The amount of training you do is up to you and depends on how competitive you wish to be.  As beginner it should be weekly or at least bi-monthly until you have the required level of safety and proficiency. But think on this – to get a firearm to a competition you need to carry it there – so your level of preparedness should be at the very least the same as an intermediate self defence shooter.

Competition training revolves around tactics, speed, and flow of movement and is a fun and dynamic training style. There are many similarities with self-defence training, just a slightly different mind-set. But at the end of the day in both you need to train towards the perfect combination of speed and accuracy.
