Firearm Competency Training

The Shooting Range now offers comprehensive firearms training! The first step to successful firearm ownership is to undergo proficiency training.

You will need to complete the Knowledge of the Law (compulsory course) together with the other categories of firearms you are going to use or apply for.

Proficiency Training can be completed in 4 easy steps:
1. Register at our office (all you need is your ID and payment of your account). Please note that registrations are appointment-based only.
2. Self-study: You will be required to complete a 50-question open-book test in your own time (per course).
3. Schedule an appointment to attend class. You will need to complete a closed-book assessment of 25-questions and a practical shooting assessment.
4. Upon successful completion of the above-mentioned steps, you will receive a Proficiency Certificate & Statement of Results (which you will need when applying for SAPS competency).

Once you have received your SAPS competency, you may start the process of applying for a firearm licence.

The Shooting Range is accredited to offer the following Firearm Unit Standards

The Law for Firearm Competency

This Unit Standard covers all the relevant legislation in terms of firearm ownership and the Firearms Control Act 2000 (Act No 60 of 2000). This Unit Standard must be completed first.

Knowledge of the Law

Unit Standard 117705
Knowledge of the Firearms Control Act 2000 (Act No 60 of 2000), that is applicable to legally possess a firearm. This unit standard must be completed first before moving onto the rest of the Basic Level Unit Standards.

Basic Firearm Competency Training

These Unit Standards cover all the necessary information for persons who wish to privately use the relevant firearms or need to apply for a competency training certificate in line with current legislation. You can obtain separate competency assessment for Handgun, Shotgun, Manually operated rifle and self loading rifle (semi-automatic) or you can complete one competency assessment that encompasses all of them

I took hubby on a surprise date to the range. Wow, was it an awesome experience! Intimidating, exhilarating, exciting, empowering, informative....Gerrie was such a great facilitator!I realized that although I always thought that I had respect for guns..... after today, I don't doubt that one should absolutely have ALOT of respect for guns! This is definitely the place to go for anyone who’s interested in firearms. The whole experience was really fun, exhilarating, informative and insightful. You will truly learn and understand how firearms work and how they’re supposed to be used safely. Even if you've never handled a firearm, the staff will enable you to be confident and comfortable to enjoy the experience from start to finish.

Had an amazing time at the shooting range! Booked the John Wick package and wasn't disappointed. Very professional and fun instructor with a lot of knowledge, who also makes you feel comfortable as a first time shooter. I can def recommend the place!

I would never have predicted that I'd find this as fun as it was but suffice to say I can't wait to book again and go back to The Shooting Range. I decided to get the Call of Duty package for my partner as a birthday present. I spoke to Michel on the phone before making a booking and he was so helpful. Even though I wasn't interested in shooting myself he advised that I get the .22 Tactical package in addition so that I could shoot as well. I'm so glad he advised me on this because it ended up being a ton of fun! My partner was so excited and we both had a great time. Michel was an amazing instructor, he was professional but also really gregarious and knowledgeable. Even if you aren't that interested, trust me its a super fun activity, especially to do as a couple or a group of friends.
